Will having a professional carpet cleaning service clean my carpets kill and prevent mold growth?
Question : Will having a professional carpet cleaning service clean my carpets kill and prevent mold growth?
The whole-house air conditioning unit in my apartment is located indoors. The unit was leaking for sometime before I even realized that it was occuring (w/i the past 4-5 weeks). The carpet was saturated and now the landlord is willing to have the carpet cleaned but not replaced. Will just having them professionally cleaned kill and prevent mold growth?
So if the padding is wet and there’s mold growth.. there’s really no reason to have it cleaned correct?

I’ve been told that once mold grows in a carpet or any porus material that is will always have mold and that it will grow anytime it gets wet again or the humidity is to high. If it doesn’t get wet again the mold is dormant and does no harm, it just sits there waiting for some water to make it start growing again.
The short answer is no, just having the carpets steam cleaned or shampooed will neither kill nor prevent mold or mildew from growing. UNLESS, they load the machine with borax or DampRid’s Mold and Mildew Remover and Protectorant for Fabrics. Both will kill the spores that create mold and mildew. Bleach works, too, but it will ruin your carpet. Most of the time, mold and mildew like damp moist environments which is exactly what the padding underneath carpet provides. Pull up a corner near where the AC leaked, if you see black you have mold and mildew.
