Question : Missouri Lemon Law? Purchased a week ago. Can my friend take the car back or is she stuck with it?
My friend just bought a used car from a local dealership “as is”, The car is purchased for her son who is just turning 16, she said that there are a lot of things she didn’t know about the car when she bought it a week ago. Now that she has been driving it around a little bit she is finding that their are things that don’t work and the other day the car just died on her, thankfully it started back up and she made it home but now she is worried about her son driving the car. What is the Lemon Law for Missouri in terms I can understand? I pulled up some info on it but it makes no sense to me. Thanks in advance for all of the help!
I do know what “as is” means, but I also thought that there was something to protect consumers when they purchase a car when the cost hits a certain amount. I’m not looking for rude answers, if you want to be mean then please don’t bother responding. Thank you to those who are here and answering because you want to be helpful, it’s appreciated very much!

AS IS means the buyer agreed to accept the car in the condition it was in.
There is no return policy on a used car. It’s like buying a used toaster from the Thrift store and getting it home only to discover it burns your toast. The only difference is the price you paid for the item. You took the risk, you pay the cost. You own it.
Lemon Laws only apply to NEW car purchases not used cars.
If the car has serious mechanical issues take it back and ask them to fix it. But you can’t get a refund. If they refuse to offer any assistance then there isn’t much you can do. You signed the AS-IS contract.
If the car just needs a few minor repairs that is to be expected, get out the check book and fix the car. It’s a used car, nobody should expect a perfect vehicle. All used cars will require some work right up front to make them right. This is typical.
I suggest she take the car to her local mechanic, have the car inspected, something she should have done prior to the purchase. Based on the mechanics findings and his expert recommendations she should then decide if she wants to invest additional funds into the car and fix the issues that make the car unsafe to drive (ignoring all the small insignificant issues) or sell the car and cut her losses.

“As is” means no lemon law protection – zero, zip, nada. Lemon laws protect the owners of NEW vehicles from serious, recurring defects during the first 12-24 months under the factory warranty. When buying a used car, the only protection is thoroughly inspecting the vehicle before buying it. After the sale, it’s too late.
