Question : Just how dangerous is mold in your home? Smell is permeating clothes…?
My mother-in-law lives alone and does not do general upkeep on her home nor regular cleaning. My husband hired a mold specialist last year before we moved to check out the visible signs of mold (specifically bathroom and window panes) He said it seemed pretty bad and he was sure it was inside of the walls and under the house.
When I got all of my clothes and other items that were stored in her home and brought them to our new residence… well, there was an extremely strong damp old, honestly NASTY, smell on them. I aired them out and now will be washing them…
But forget the clothes- my mother-in-law is living in this house! How can we tell her she needs to take the steps to clean and get things taken care of ? I mean, isn’t it true that mold can actually kill you? She doesn’t believe anything I or her son says… But now, I am extremely worried! If clothes can smell THAT bad (I’m talking it made me nauseous and I do not have a weak stomach) in just a year- I am sure living there for 20 years is doing or has done some damage!

Yes some molds are very dangerous even causing brain damage and death.

Black molds or dark brown molds are toxic this will need to be treated ASAP it is hazardous to your health(trigger in asthma,cause cancer ,itchy nose and some illness) The mold specialist says seemed pretty bad means he’s answer is 50/50 for understanding of hazardous thing and he’s not really a professional/active on that job.Since he examined it and he’s answer is in doubt then do your part go to the city health office in your area ask a chemical and the chart to test the mold how toxic it be some city give’s you a small amount of that chemical with gloves and few stick of cotton buds with instruction how to test it. if they don’t give you it might be they send someone to examine and get a sample of that molds then they do a lab test on that.Take note if the city health department discover that those molds are toxic there wil l be a chance that all the wall or ceiling that infected will be removed.
The nasty smell means the house is humid there’s a dampness on it maybe there’s a leak or the bathroom has no exhaust fan/Ventilations check that out too if no exhaust then you need to install it to take out the dampness .Good luck….. -

Sounds like there’s too much humidity. Install at least a dehumidifier or preferably an air to air heat exchanger (heat recovery ventilator). This should bring in fresh air and exhaust the polluted air. Then you need to clean or remove all the affected items or surfaces in the house. If it’s extremely bad, do some research on what it takes to fix a ‘grow op’ house.

sounds like she has a water leak somewhere thats the only reason for mold
