I’ve never had a pit bull, but I’ve always had Allstate. They’ve never asked about my having pets, much less what kind. I owned an Akita who weighed 125 pounds and was a VERY aggressive dog toward strangers. I never had any trouble getting insurance.

My pit-mix was listed on all the papers as a Labrador, Terrier cross. Some list the dog by its proper name (if it has been breed by the book) as an American Stafford-shire Terrier. The Breed standard is strict for this dog and it not the fighting animal that has been cross bred to create bigger, stronger and more aggressive dogs. Some companies require strict fencing just like a swimming pool.

about 15 yrs ago all the insurance companies compiled a list of dogs that were “unacceptable” and could not be insured, the pitbulls were number 1 on the list, as long as people/children continue to be killed by pitbulls then you can forget finding a company willing to take the chance … I realize that there are some good dogs but the majority of people who buy these dogs have no idea how to manage them therefore making them a double threat

Not any more – I don’t know of any. But ask them if your dog is certified in obedience and has a good citizen certificate, that might make a difference.

I know I had to sign a statement with my insurance company stating that I do not currently own or will own in the future a dog that is on their “aggressive” dog list.

Generally State funded insurance companies are available for people who have trouble finding other markets for insurance. Check with your current agent and see if your state has a risk pool.
