Should be able to get it through the county Department of Vital Statistics, in the county seat. Do a Google search to find the county web site, which may tell how to proceed.

Do NOT go to the city…cities in California do not keep those kinds of records
Do NOT call the hospital…hospitals in California do not keep those kinds of records.
Do NOT look for something called Department of Vital Statistics, there is no such agency in California.
Do NOT go first to the California state agency. You will get this kind of information much faster from the County agency which keeps these records in California: the County Recorder.
DO a Google search for the County of birth, and Recorder, and you will get a link to the proper County Recorder. Most can provide this information with an on line request.
ONLY if you cannot link to the right County Recorder should you use the link that Crashqueen has provided to the State Department of Health Services. You can get the records there, but it will take much longer.

When try to obtain a birth certificate in California you must go to the county the person was born in. If your friend was born in Sacramentocity, this is in Sacramento County. Here is a link to order a birth certificate in Sacramento county.

a birth certificate can be ordered over the internet. he needs to know the city where he was born. the health dept. for that co. will have a copy.just have him start a search by typing in how to get a birth certificate,or similar wording. he will find sites that will allow him to type in his info, like parents names, city of birth, etc. i got mine on line for 10.00 , and it arrives within a week or two. best wishes

I just had to do this, I live in Minnesota now and had to get a copy from California. For California the telephone number to call for information is (916)445-2684 and the website for vital records in cali is http://www.dhs.ca.gov/hisp/chs/OVR/ordercert.htm , he will need to go to the website and print out 3 pages, Than he will have to have one page notarized if he wants a certified copy. Kind of a pain in the butt but itll get him what he needs.
