17th January 2007 –

ThePirateBay BitTorrent tracker, recently said he is looking for a new country, to operate from. However, the news is here as ThePirateBay has decided to buy their own land, instead of finding one with the copyright laws relaxed.

They found Sealand, a micro-nation, sovereignty is disputed, and launched the website to try BuySealand.com, funds for the purchase of the increase up to 8 digits or more (10 million or more). However, the inclusion of such action are clear: “We are The Pirate Bay, and we know what we are doing is illegal, when we buy our own country in order to define our own laws.” This is far from their traditional defense, “We do nothing” illegal.

The debate legality, fundraising should be interesting to watch, with strong social and ethical consequences if it succeeds.

Consider the consequences of organic ThePirateBay by a large number of Internet users that their money to go to the PirateBay profit rather than in the hands of the owner of copyright in the original video, music preference support, books and software, they are finite the downloading of the service PirateBay. The irony is that the same people are wired to give money, the first blow whistles when it comes to copyright infringement against Apple, Web developers and designers. Ethically, it seems Internet users have serious double standards.

My argument is simple: We see a trend where the rights of intellectual property value is declining, and more and more difficult to implement. This is party because of the high prevalence of piracy, but also because of the potential capacity of governments to reduce services such as Pirate Bay, and to define their own laws.
