Question : Is it possible to purchase a warranty for a HVAC system only? (Like a home warranty)?
Most of my home’s appliances are new … except for the HVAC system. So buying a comprehensive home warranty (like Shield Star, American Home Shield, etc) seems a bit overboard. Is it possible to buy a discounted warranty that only covers the HVAC? If so, what companies offer such plans and how do I contact them?

Many warranty companies almost automatically decline warranty coverage on the first claim. They almost always say that you did not maintain the unit properly, regardless of your documentation. You may also have to pay the 1st $ 50 if a service call or the 1st $ 200 of covered repairs or some %age of the repairs. The end result is that including the initial warranty cost, plus the copays, you’ve almost paid for the repair outright.

They’ve been in the business long enough to know what the risk of repair will be. If they think the risk is too great, they will price the warranty policy accordingly. You’re betting you’re going to collect, they’re betting you won’t. Most of the time, they win.

If I purchased an extended warranty for my large screen TV, cell phone, refrigerator, chest freezer, computer, stove, blender, coffee pot, food processor, central AC unit, vacuum cleaner, DVD player, beer cooler, garage door opener and all the other stuff we need to live in my home, I could have saved all that money and paid for the repair outright and still have warranty money left over in my pocket. Actually, I don’t ever buy a warranty for those very reasons.

So, the bottom line is: What do you think your chances are of needing the repairs? How much would the cost of a compressor replacement (most expensive item) vs the cost of the warranty and copays? Just call around and ask for the estimated cost for your particular unit.
