All medical doctors are physicians. But you can be a doctor of anything. Thus PhD. Doctor of Philosophy. Physicians are simply doctors of medicine. Thus MD.
A physician is a medical doctor, and that’s what most people think of when they hear the word “doctor.” They have M.D. degrees, or sometimes the degree of D.O (Doctor of Osteopathy). They attend four years of medical school after completing a Bachelor’s Degree, The bachelor’s is usually in a science such as biology, biochemistry, microbiology, organic chemistry, or physiology,
Other health professionals who use the title “Doctor” include Chiropractors (Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine), Podiatrists (Doctor of Podiatry), Optometrists (Doctor of Optometry), Dentists (Doctor of Dental Science usually), and Veterinarians (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine). These also require four years of schooling following graduation from college.
If you don’t want to spend four years in a medical school but want to be in the medical field, consider becoming a nurse, a physician’s assistant, a midwife, a dental hygenist, a physical therapist, a massage tehrapist, a veterinary technician, or an EMT. As the population of the U.S. ages, the medical arena is a growth industry. It’s a good place to be.
Good luck!
