Question : What are some long-distance moving options?
I’m probably going to move from Philadelphia to Seattle in the next year or so and I was wondering what my options are for long-distance moves and about how much I can expect to pay. I will have no more than a sparse 1-bedroom apt. worth of belongings. I am thinking pod-type services might be the easiest and cheapest for me, but I’m not sure. I’m also not sure about how much I can be expected to pay for a move. Feel free to list experiences with companies you dealt with and cost for moving similar distances.
I’m looking more for information on pod-type services and anything unconventional. I’m aware of u-haul and services where you pay someone to move things for you.

You can do it two ways:

- hire movers to load and drive your stuff out there
- get a Uhaul type thing and load and drive the stuff out there yourself

It will be more expensive to hire movers, especially if you don’t have alot of stuff. I don’t know about the pod things because I would think you would need to sign a contract for certain amount of time for renting it, like a few months, and that wouldn’t be worth it for you.

I have done it both ways, hiring movers and moving it myself, but not across country. If you aren’t comfortable driving it yourself and can’t get a friend or relative to do it, you will need to hire the movers. That also leaves you to drive your car out rather than hitch it to the back of your Uhaul thing.

The problem with movers is that they generally have several loads going in the same direction at one time so your stuff may take a while to get there, weeks even, because they have to stop and unload or load along the way.

If you can get someone to drive your stuff and you can drive your car, I would just do it yourself through Uhaul, Ryder, Enterprise or Budget.
