Question : can nj homeowners insurance drop you bc you have a pitbull? i heard there was a vicious dog law that protects?
my moms home owners insurance asked her what kind of dog she had she told them it was a mutt and then they asked what it looked like and she told them a pitbull and now they are trying to drop her, i heard there is a law called the vicious dog law that states unless the dog does harm they cant drop her, does anyone have information on this?

thats well bad i never heard this cos i live in uk but so what next it be what sort of kids ya got and dropping them because there a young age

yes a lot of insurance companies won’t carry you with certain dogs without paying extra. since she lied to them at first about breed they are worrying that she will lie on claim.

I don’t understand why insurance companies drop you instead of just refusing to cover any injury caused by your dog(s). That way they’d still make their money and not lose it if your dog went nuts.

I don’t know that there is any law telling a private business who they can and cannot cover. Then again, if a utilities company here in Idaho can’t shut off your power in winter due to lack of payment if anybody under the age of 16 lives in your home, then maybe they can also govern dangerous dog statues in a private business. Call a lawyer and ask, they’ll probably know and phone calls are generally free.

There are many municipalities in NJ that have bans against the bully breeds…pit bulls most of all. If there is a legal ban in your city, then the insurance company can legally drop the owner. If you have papers on the dog…like adoption papers… see what they say. My dog is an American Staffordshire Terrier mixed with a Bassett Hound..but his papers say Bassett-Terrier mix. Check it out and see. If you can show them something like that, they cannot legally withdraw your insurance contract. Also,for 50 dollars you can get dna done. If the dna says the MAIN breed is not pitbull, you could use that as well. Too bad some morons who don’t train their dogs ruin it for the rest of the bully breeds!

No insurance policy will pay out a claim against damage inflicted by certain breeds of dogs. Usually prohibited dogs include pitbulls and chows. So if your dog bites someone and you are sued, (and dog bite lawsuits make up the majority of suits filed in America), your insurance company will not pay out. So you are totally liable for any damages to the person bitten, mauled, or killed.

Sorry, you need to get a gentler breed of dog in order to be insured.

Not uncommon. Ask the insurance company if they’ll reinstate the insurance if the dog gets a Canine Good Citizenship certification. I think some insurnace companies are ok with big dogs if there’s a CGC.

And get your dog trained.

Sorry to hear that, she should have said ‘boxer cross’.
Pitties take a bad rap. I’ve met several that were sweethearts and
played with the neighborhood kids just like any other dog … until the ‘panic’ hit.
