Hello,
Does anyone know how can you kill mold (it is not toxic black mold) in your basement/attic? I have heard that bleach will not kill it, rather just die it a lighter color so that you cannot see it. Any suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated! I know there’s mold remediation places out there, but we wanted to try to do it ourselves, first. The mold in the basement is not up to the first floor or the rafters, just on the cement wall.

In Atlanta, Georgia, my fiance’s house has been sabotaged by the pouring rain over the summer. Since we haven’t been to it since April, it has collected mold everywhere. We are going there this holiday to get it somewhat cleaned and pull out all of his art that wasn’t destructed. Does anyone have suggestions on what cleaning products are useful? ie: a mop, broom, rags, chemicals, scrapping materials…

Bleach kills mold on contact – its the cheapest and best solution. I use a 50/50 mix of bleach and water in a spray bottle.
Mold needs a damp environment with high moisture – so an easy fix is to run a fan in the room/area with the mold to dry it out.

I had a sales rep offer me free installation and equipment. He said there was no upfront cost, only paying the monthly payment. I was quoted $ 39 a month plus tax which comes to about $ 44 a month. I live in a townhome and was told I would be able to get at least 10% off my personal property insurance because of the home security. Does this sound like a good deal? How’s the quality of Firstline compared to ADT or Brinks? Are they reliable. I’m located in Minnesota and seem not to have a local office. Should I be worried if something were to happen with no technicans to come fix it asap?

Nothing worth getting is free. Aside from the fact you will be paying almost double standard monitoring rates, you are going to be looped into a long term contract and you may or may not own the equipment in the end. Thing is, to these larger companies (ADT & Brinks included) alarm systems and monitoring is a numbers game… the more they have the happier they are. In order to be successful at this game you need to get the systems in as fast and as cost effective as possible. hmmmm that sounds safe.
My suggestion to you would be to take a look around locally. Just because a commercial says “use us we are the best” does not mean it is true. Try to find a local company that is not affiliated with one of the big numbers game companies. I have been approached by a one of the companies on your list but I refuse to sell my clients out. I will not go into details or name the company, just suffice to say my customers would not have been happy with the outcome.

I was a realtor in a national real estate office a few years ago. We had four brochures for different home warranty companies in our office. I suggest that you contact any large real estate office and ask if they have these brochures (you might also ask two or three of them if they have any preferences and why). The prices do not vary by much from company to company and the services are usually about the same. The differences that I found were with the local companies that were subcontracted to do the work. The Warranty companies have local companies that contract with them to do the work. Sometimes the local companies are extremely prompt and other times the company may be 50 miles away and it may take days to get there and do the work. My experience with the company that we had was excellent, but ask a realtor in your area for some advice. They do not have an interest in the companies, but the packages are frequently added on as a sales tool when homes are on the market. Call a large company – they can give you the answers for your city. If you are buying one for your own home that you intend to keep – read the brochures thoroughly to see which ones best suit your needs. Some do not cover as much as others, yet as I said, the prices are all very similar. These are also renewable each year and are really a pretty good investment. We got our central heat fixed, some plumbing problems taken care of and a range replaced that could not be fixed (got a brand new one) in our first year after buying our home (an older home which came with the warranty). The year’s warranty had cost the previous owner about $ 450 but saved us a whole lot more than that.
