Do you think there is a conflict of interest?
Question : Do you think there is a conflict of interest?
I remember a few years back, Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks was in the process of signing Dennis Rodman, he didn’t have much cap space and he was going to allow him to live on his estate in one of his guest houses as a perk….the NBA stepped in and said NO-NO!
Of course Sidney Crosby lives at Mario’s and Lemiuex is part of the Pen’s ownership group. Should the NHL have an issue with this?
Also….I consider myself a bit of a student of the salary cap and how it operates and it also made me think of ways of circumventing the cap AND I know of at least a couple of people who got jobs within an organization (or at the arena) BECAUSE they were friends of a player on that team. Should the NHL have an issue with this? Does the NHL have a rule in the CBA pertaining to “favours?”
For instance, a big market team….say the Leafs as an example, want to sign a player for 6 MM per season, however they only have 5.5MM in cap space, is there anything preventing them from offering this contract…………….
5.5MM per season
Older brother gets a position as the Director of Suite Sales at Air Canada Center for 150,000 per year
Younger brother gets some position as a gopher, towel boy, laundry aide…some BS position for 50,000 per year
Sister gets a job as some media relations
Friend gets a job as whatever………you get the picture
While I am sure that this stuff can’t be actually put into a contract, is there anything preventing a team from letting the player stay rent free in their “guest house” or giving that family member an “executive of executive to the assistant of executive suites” as a contract “perk?”
Leafs Fan- Apparently he has his own living quarters at Mario’s house…..I was told that he would often babysit for them (LOL) but Mario’s kids are starting to get old enough now……in fact, one is off to Shattuck-St-Mary’s this Fall so….
J.O……good point witht the College Scouts……get them some nice 3000$ suits, no show jobs for their Dad, etc….LOL No show jobs…..kind of has a mafioso tone to it.
BTW…..not France, just English….neighbourhood, flavour, rumour, favour……it’s you crazy Americans that do it wrong LOL…….seriously, proper English (British)……..just the way I learned here in Canada….I will spell it both ways though. Spell chack on here keeps trying to fix it!
Greg- Cindy Crosby? Who is that? Do you mean Cindy Crawford? Bring in the X-Files to investigate the big conspiracy.

There’s a call holding on line one for you. A “B Burke” from a 416 area code.
Is Lemieux charging Crosby rent? I mean, what would you or I have to pay to billet at Chez Mario (and I’m guessing that Herr Lemieux doesn’t exactly live in a dump…the guy’s a member at Oakmont, which doesn’t exactly give away memberships). It’s a fair question. If Lemieux isn’t charging Crosby rent, does Crosby have to earn his keep (wash dishes, clean the house, take out the garbage, go shopping for groceries, pick up Mario’s dry cleaning, etc.)? When I billeted way way back in the day, I had to sign a contract agreeing to terms and pay a small amount of money. Presumably, there’s some sort of signed agreement between the two parties in question. If not, then as they say…we have a situation.
If perks and incentives are part of an agreed contract, then it should be no one’s concern.
If they are ‘off’ record, it’s not good business and should be approached with caution (if at all). Perks and incentives not mentioned, agreed upon, or in writing has a way of coming back to bite someone on either side of the deal.
