Why do the rich in gated communities like to hide from the poor and middle class?
Question : Why do the rich in gated communities like to hide from the poor and middle class?
You should see it here in Florida with the gated communities. Tampa Bay area, Naples (especially Naples!), Miami, Palm Beach, etc. What is it with the hiding thing. The hidden golf courses, etc. I notice that they even send out nannies to do the grocery shopping. We really live in a divided society down here. More divided than most folks even imagine.
Wow. Some people got really defensive on this one. we are a country strictly divided by class. We are not as united as we think.
kurtbiewald is really the only one so far that touched upon the deep psychological reasons behind this.

Excuse me, would you want some street urchin ringing
your doorbell, disturbing your maid, asking if they could use
your baffroom ?
I think we have to protect ourselves from the dangers of the
troublemakers any way we legally can and Gated Communities
are one FINE way to keep out the riff raff. Rich or Poor. -

Maybe they’re afraid to catch the plague. Little do they know that plague sees not class, color or anything else. When it comes and the bottom falls out, we will all get it, not just the rich.
Oh an they are afraid someone is going to steal from them, when the truth is they’ve already been stolen from by taxation LOL.
They think the poor are criminals and failed to look in a mirror and they blame the poor for the curse on society when it is actually their own kinds that inbred to keep “a noble class” of persons. -

Most, not all because of generalizing, rich people seperate themselves from the poorer citizens of America because of a couple reasons:
1) They don’t want us middle-class citizens to “steal” their money. Many rich people wrongfully beleive we are living only to take away their property and investments.
2) Others seperate from society because they are driven by greed and want to keep everything for themselves: “Why should we make those poorer people happy? They should work harder to get money!” In fact, many wealthy citizens in America get their property from a lucky bounce. For example, you invest 100,000 $ in a stock which shoots through the roof. (like gas mask companies right after 9/11)
3) However, the main reason for them seperating from us “lower class citizens” is because they actually believe they are better than we are. Therefore, they think: “why should we see the poorer citizens?” When you noticed that they ‘even send out nannies to do the grocery shopping’, that is the epitome of the arrogance of many wealthy people in America. They don’t want even mingle with “petty-folk” like ourselves. Although they may have wealth in money, they lack wealth in morals.

1)The point of the gated community is to keep the burglars out and make it difficult for them to scope the place out.
2) Many housekeepers do grocery shopping. Grocery shopping is really boring so why not pay somebody else to do it for you if you can afford it. I use a grocery delivery service.
3)People who have money usually do not stay at the same places as those who don’t, they stay at the Ritz, not Motel 6 so unless you have money you are not going to run into them very often.
4)Most rich people do not shop at Wal-Mart very often so you are not going to run into them there either. -

I lived in Naples, although in no gated communities.
Many of the wealthy Neapolitans were rarely living at those gated communities, keeping also a main home in the north, from which they came. They choose such a lifestyle because they believe it is safer, it is less stressful and they can afford to do it, since the streets are private (hence the ability to put in a gatehouse) and they pay for the maintenance. However, these are the same people who make massive donations for the Philharmonic, charities, churches, museums, etc.

SO WHAT??? Are you jealous of the rich? Believe me, the people who live in those gated communities, worked hard to be able to afford to live in them. If you would aspire to join them, I suggest you get yourself a better education, so that you might get a better paying job, and thus be able to afford to live there.

I live in Florida and we have many gated communities in my city, but I haven’t seen the divide you are referring to. They are just people who can afford to not have every one on their golf course, and they pay dearly to know not just anyone is driving down their streets casing the neighborhood. I also know of non gated neighborhoods that are wealthier yet. I think you are just intimidated by wealth. You shouldn’t be. It could be you in that neighborhood one day.
