As for cupboards & countertops, I always say that when I redo my kitchen I'm going to get counters the color of coffee so that it's not so obvious when I drip. Red might be hard to repaint. I would go for more contrasts like with bright white pillows etc. Maybe Yellows or light pinks. I like black with red but that isn't exactly log cabin look.
