BRAINTREE, MA and BREWSTER, MA…

On May 25, Memorial Day, Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops held its 5th annual Spotlight on the Troops at the K-Mart Plaza on Route 132 in Hyannis. In addition to honoring U. S. service men and women at the event, Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops collected items for care packages to be sent to troops serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Boston Pack and Ship, a Braintree-based small load shipping specialist, donated 200 boxes and packing supplies towards this effort.

Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops is a non-profit organization started by 15-year-old Dylan DeSilva of Brewster, Mass. Dylan wanted to find a way to honor U. S. Troops for their service and sacrifice to our country. With the help of his family and friends, he sends care packages to our Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan on a weekly basis. The Spotlight on the Troops is just one of the vehicles Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops holds to generate awareness and collect donations.

“Good things may come in small packages, but without the packages, we can’t collect or send anything anywhere. So we really appreciate Boston Pack and Ship’s generous donation as some of those were used to collect donations at the Spotlight on the Troops event and the rest will be used to ship the care packages overseas,” said DeSilva.

Donating to Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops is not a new endeavor for Boston Pack and Ship. The Braintree-based packing and shipping company also donated boxes to Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops holiday effort in which more than 500 care packages were sent to troops overseas.

“When we heard Dylan’s story, it wasn’t a question of would we help, but how much could we help,” said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship. “By donating boxes for the event and the mailing, as well as selling additional boxes at cost, we’re hopefully doing our part in keeping this very worthwhile effort going. ”

For people who would like to contribute items for the care packages, Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops’ Web site, www. capecod4thetroops. com, contains a complete list of personal, food and other useful items you can donate. Interested parties can donate at the Spotlight on the Troops event on Monday, May 25 or at any of the drop-off locations also listed on www. capecod4thetroops. com.

If you would like to make a monetary contribution, please send a check to: Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops Troops, 1831 Long Pond Rd.   Brewster, MA  02631.

Where can I find Foam Lined Boxes to pack with supplies for travel?

1

I am looking for foam lined boxes (hard cover/plastic boxes) to put things in for traveling either via air or FedEx/UPS. I need these boxes to keep things inside from getting damaged. I’ve been using lots of bubble wrap but that is a pain. Any ideas?
Thanks

Why is my brother moving back home he has his own business?

6

My brother has his own business applying siding and energy efficient windows . . . why is his business suffering? He was doing really well! Now he’s moving back home which means I have to give him my room and I have my own entrance with my own kitchenette! I am really mad as this is my senior year and I feel as though he should be on his own.

What is the best way to pack kitchen gadgets when moving home?

3

Hi,

I’ll be moving apartments in a couple of weeks and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to pack those awkward kitchen gadgets? I’m particularly anxious about my blender and food processor, as they have a lot of attachments with them, and I am worried they may break. I’m also concerned about a ‘V’ slice I have, as it has a lot of sharp blades and edges.

Thanks in advance,

Ryleigh.

Does customs tax apply to a gift package from the US to the UK?

1

As a way to get around the HUGE customs tax on clothing from America, I was thinking about having the package sent to a friend in America, and for her to then send it onto me, by declaring it as a gift.

Does customs tax apply to gift packages?

(Customs on clothing purchased from the internet is 12. 5%, ouch!)

If not, I might resort to this tactic more often.

Thanks in advance.

Know of any GRAND PIANO MOVERS in/near the DFW area?

1

I need a reputable, cheap, grand piano movers that will move a piano upstairs possibly. somewhere near the the dfw area in particular I am moving the piano from Roanoke, TX to Grapevine, TX. . . (if any1 knows where that is)

has anyone had any experience with one?? also does any1 know if they will even be able to move the piano up the stairs? there is a 180 degree turn midway up the stairs. . we do have a big window on the second floor but I have no idea how we would take the window out and all that and put a crane through it (I dont think I can pay for all that it would probably be too expensive)

Thanks!!

Dishonest grand piano movers?

A customer owns a grand piano that actually has four points of contact with the floor, not the traditional 3. The four contacts form a quadrilateral which is formed by 2 sides of 60″ at right angles at front left, then a 30″ side in the back also at right angles, and then a sloping right side. He contracts professional piano movers to have it moved to his studio. When they arrive and move the piano in place, they present him a bill based on the weight of the piano, which they claim is 900 pounds. When asked by the customer for verification of the weight, they showed him by putting a scale under each of the four legs in turn, going clockwise from the front right corner 200, 300, 200, 200 = 900 pounds. They argue that the piano’s weight is the sum of what it weighs at each corner, which is how it’s always done with traditional 3-legged pianos. If they charged him 900 dollars for the move, by how much they did really overcharge him?
“Oh, sorry, you’re right, we’re counting the back legs twice! So, we’ll only charge you $700!” Even at $700, by how much they’re overcharging him?

Colorado Papa, I think that’s a great argument the customer can try in convincing the movers to charge only $500. So far we’ve heard 3 figures–$900, $700, $500. Any of them really correct, or?
Okay, the list of possible weights has grown to 500, 600, 700, 900 pounds. Maybe a proof or two would be of help here?
First Grade Rocks! Now you understand why grand piano movers are only in the business of moving heavy things! Give me some time to digest your analysis, even though you did arrive at the correct figure, 600 pounds.
First Grade Rocks!, your analysis was an interesting approach. I would have just assigned an unknown weight W at location (x,y) of the center of gravity of the piano. If I have 3 independent equations, then I can solve for W, x, y. In fact, this problem does contain an hidden assumption, which is that the center of gravity is approximately in the middle of the piano, so that when a scale is put under either A or B, the piano tilts at CD, when it’s under D, it tilts at AC, and when it’s under C, it tilts at BD. From the weighings, we can work out W = 600, x = 20″, y = 20″, if C = (0,0).
Now, considering your approach in dividing up the weight of the piano into loads directly over A, B, C, D. It so happens that there is more than one way to divide up the weight in this fashion to achieve the same results, it’s not unique in this case. So, given that A and B “weigh the same” by scale, I can put the 200 pounds on B, so that not only A would “weigh” 200 pounds also, I can assign a 300 pound weight on point C, since that’s what it “weighs” when the piano is tilted on BD and A plays no role. That leaves only the weight on D to figure out. We know that it “weighs” 200 pounds, but simple lever analysis tells us that 100 pounds is contributed by the 200 pounds on point B (because the piano is tilted on AC), so we deduce that the weight on D is 100 pounds, making 600 pounds in all. In fact, the 3 weights at B, C, D do have a center of gravity right at (20, 20).

I’m moving from Portugal to the United States. What baggage shipping/relocation/rem. oval services can I use?

1

I’m in Lisbon, Portugal.
Which services are more reliable? I can do sea or air, just looking for good quality service that aren’t too expensive.
I won’t be moving any furniture, just an incredible amount of clothing and personal items.
