Any ideas on log homes?
We are wanting to build a log home ourselves. Any ideas, suggestions, or comments that would help us out. Anything from how to build to how to decorate.

My late father built log homes and my elderly mother still lives in one he built. Best suggestion is to use cedar logs. The log home brand he built was Otsego Log Homes. The cedar logs do not rot easily nor do they warp, which can causes gaps in outer walls. They do cost alittle more than regular pine logs, but you pay less in the long run. All houses, log or regular, need upkeep. Upkeep on log homes is re-caulking and re-waterproofing. You will need to re-caulk every so many years, but the better the caulking, the less often you need to caulk. My mother has lived in one now for almost 15 yrs and we have had to recaulk only once in that time. You must also re-waterproof but this is like painting a normal house except no stripping of old paint. Log homes also stay warmer and cooler than normal houses. My mother heats with a wood stove fireplace insert. She often must open a window because it gets too warm in the winter. So far this summer, she has yet to run her air conditioner. Hope this answers some of your questions..
