Budget Honeymoon in Kauai in December?

I’m looking for affordable accommodations near Kapaa Hawaii in early December for my new wife and I. We’ve never been to Hawaii, and have never done the whole vacation rental thing. I’m not sure whether to do a hotel, resort, vacation home rental, or studio rental! Obviously we want to be away from crowds, but don’t want to have to worry about cleaning up after ourselves (as home rentals don’t have daily maids).

At the same time, privacy is a major thing. Not sure if there’s nice rooms at uncrowded resorts/hotels. I’m trying to spend under a hundred dollars per night. It seems that vacation rentals’ cleaning fees end up making the total cost similar to hotel rooms.

I also hear that food is expensive, so we’re looking for something with a kitchen, so that we have that option if necessary. Thanks for any advice!

There are lots of places to stay in Kauai. My wife and I stayed in the Outrigger Waipaloui Resort and Spa. We bought our honeymoon trip as a package on Orbitz.com. The Outrigger is in Kapaa and there is a Safeway grocery store across the street. My wife and I bought some food and since our room had a full kitchen, cooked a lot of meals thereby saving some money. I don’t think the Outrigger will be less than $100 per night but you can see what the price is on the vacation package. My wife and I went in July which is an expensive time and we got our tickets, hotel and rental car for less than $1,600 per person. This was flying out of Cincinnati and staying at the hotel for 6 nights.

I was about to give the first poster a thumbs up until I read his entire post. He gives some misinformation. Prices are NOT less on the south shore. In fact, Poipu (south shore) and Princeville (north shore) have the highest hotel/vacation rental prices on the island. The west side is not all military installations. Pacific Missile Range Facility is located on the extreme west side of the island, but that’s about it. There aren’t any big hotels on the west side, but there ARE vacation rentals. The west side of the island is the sunniest and driest and it’s also the least populated (with tourists, at least), so if you’re looking for privacy, check out the west side. Also, December is the middle of the rainy season on Kauai. The entire island will get some rain, but it’s less concentrated and less often on the west side (and south shore).

I’ve placed some links below of vacation rentals in your price range on the west side of Kauai. Kekaha is pretty far out on the west side so it will certainly be less touristy than other parts of the island, but it’s pretty far from a lot of the attractions (other than Waimea Canyon) the island has to offer. If you don’t mind a nice drive, one of these might suit you well. (Please note that I do NOT own any of these rental units! I have used http://www.vrbo.com several times for vacation rentals and have always been happy with them. That’s the only reason I posted those links here. Just kind of “giving back,” you know?)

First, you ain’t going to Kauai cheap, so forget about that ($100/night will get you a flea bag with crappy views and zero privacy … budget at least $150/$200 if you want that). Rental properties are probably all filled by now, so good luck there. Lowest prices are the south shore area, with prices rising as you go up the east coast until you hit the north shore (west is pretty much all military installations).
