Abstract: this article deals with the definition, classification and testing of barrier property of materials. Common erroneous views and vague knowledge are also listed in each item with corresponding rectification. Keywords: barrier property, classification, and test

For the reason that barrier material can improve the preservation effect and prolong the storage period of products, it has experienced a rapid development in recent years. Correspondingly, the wide application of barrier materials has also promoted the popularization of permeability testers. Since the conception of barrier material is rather new, a correct understanding of the barrier property as well as its correct testing is very important to actual production and selling.

1. Barrier Property of Materials

Barrier property is commonly in connection with particular permeable objects, which include common gases, water vapor, liquid and organic substance, etc. it refers to the property of material when specified permeable object transmits from one side to the other (from high density side into low density side). The whole transmitting process includes adsorption, dissolution, diffusion, and desorption. Gases or water vapor enter the surface of materials from higher density side. After diffusing inside material, it desorbs on the low-density side

The speed of the permeation process depends on two factors. One is the speed of solution in polymer materials, i. e. , solubility parameter. The other is the travel rate of permeable molecules inside the base of polymer, which is indicated by diffusion coefficient.

2 Classifications and Interrelationship of Material Barrier Properties

Permeable processes of different objects through the same materials are different. According to the nature of permeable objects, barrier property of materials can be divided into barrier property of inorganic gases (i. e. , the permeability we commonly say. It can be further divided into oxygen permeability, nitrogen permeability and carbon dioxide permeability, etc. ), to water vapor barrier property (water vapor permeability), and to organic matter barrier property. Permeable principles of the three kinds of material are different. Moreover, owing to the difference of permeable objects, their permeable processes vary greatly.

Generally, when we say that barrier property of certain material is better, we refer to three aspects: better barrier property to inorganic gases, to water vapor and to organic matters. However, wrong ideas of generalization are common in describing barrier properties of materials. For example, materials with better gas barrier property is often considered as higher barrier materials, however, higher barrier material means that this kind of material should simultaneously possess better barrier property to gases, to water vapors and to organic matters. In fact, it is possible that this does not match with the reality in terms of its barrier property to water vapor and organic matter. EVOH has very high barrier property to gases in extremely low humidity, which will decrease significantly with the increasing of humidity. Moreover, its barrier property to water vapor is not good.

Special attention should be paid to the fact that even gas permeability (barrier property) to certain material varies in specific gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. It has been proved by the test results that to one same material, there is certain proportional relation between its oxygen permeability, carbon dioxide permeability and nitrogen permeability. The reason is that permeable processes of inorganic gases are rather similar, with the dimension and shape of molecules as the main influenced factors. But, this proportional relation will change with different materials.

4 Conclusions

With the popularization of the conception of barrier property, insiders of the packaging industry have the demand to further the understanding of barrier property. A further understanding of barrier property will not only help packing manufacturers design the structure of packing materials effectively and reasonably, but help the research personnel to better their performance of relating test as well.

Calculating Living Cost Equals Cash Savings

0

“Why use charts to calculate living expenses?”

When you are looking at estimates of costs, the cost of living charts can actually benefit you. It takes several steps in figuring it out, in planning.

1.     Come up with your estimate cost of living using a calculator.

2.     Take a trip to your new location to see if those estimates match

3.      Log additional expenses that you discovered along the way.

By using the chart method steps, you will have estimated your living costs.

My job asked me to relocate. I thought it would be a piece of cake. I knew I had the option to stay where I was, but I was giving an incentive bonus to make more money, compared to the living cost, if I would help open a new overseas office. I didn’t have the faintest clue, how complicated it would be to calculate living costs. There really is a lot more to it than what meets the eye.

The taboo,  you can’t really determine the cost of living until you get there. Your estimates may be pretty good, but they are only that, estimates. For example it‘s easy to find, what food costs, housing, doctor’s fee and so forth. Don’t forget the other intangibles that are difficult to calculate. It would be those items that you use habitually, that are not available there, may have to be imported at considerable expense. If public transportation is better or worse in traveling than at your point of origin, this change will affect your overall cost too.

In fact a lot of the time the cost of relocation involves more than living costs. It is not practical to take all your stuff with you, particularly if you are moving overseas. Fortunately today, most companies out there will help you to defray moving costs, if they are planning to relocate you. The only other thing you have to think about is economic stability. If you are living somewhere where the climate suddenly turns sour, you can lose all your savings! Be careful and keep tabs on the local currency.

I was glad that I took advantage using the charts to calculate my living cost that were offered at the Cost of Living Chart- Bali. It saved me the headache with shelling out extra cash and wasted time, in moving to paradise

Packing For Relocation – Tips To Get A Good Packing Kit

0

What these kits actually offer you differs from company to company, and on the package that you purchase. While some companies offer new material only, others make cheaper kits by using old and used boxes in good shape, which is a great idea when you are looking to save every penny.
So what exactly goes into the making of these supply kits? The first things of course are, boxes. They are conveniently made in small sizes for books and CDs, which weigh too much when stacked in large cases. The cube shaped boxes are good for packing glass barware and cutlery of smaller sizes. The medium size eighteen inch boxes are perfect for large and light animals etc. The very large boxes are good for fans, stuffed toys and the likes of those. The extra large boxes can hold the rest of the items which do not seem to fit into any of the other categories. You could order custom made boxes for large paintings and rugs and carpets.
A packing kit of the kind mentioned above can easily pack the belongings of a three room house. You could always purchase a few extra boxes for your unique requirement. Oh, and the kits come with strong packing tape and marker pens, so you know exactly what goods are in what box later. A kitchen kit comes with the proper packing material for knives and breakable and dangerous kitchen items, and can be purchased separately if required. Some companies very often throw in a few extra boxes for odds and ends like coat hangers etc. This article should give you a good idea of what you can expect out of a ready made packing kit. Once you have this idea you can decide if you want to purchase one of these.
Remember, by no means are we saying that a kit like this will ensure that every little item is packed when you finish. You may very well need to customize your kit by adding a little to it here and there in the form of more boxes. However, it is a good skeleton plan to start with.

Tips for Choosing your Mover

0

Having all your belongings in someone else’s hands could be frightening. Finding a moving company, which is reliable, responsible on your belongings and on that affordable could really be a complicated task. The information could assist you to find right moving company for you.

Ask around

Ask each of your potential movers for more references from their previous customers and if possible ask for documents on their history and service. Take advantage of free estimates, having few free estimates will surely give you a effective idea of how expensive or cheap your move would be. Remember that certain movers may offer estimates, which are offensively low and then handover you a large bill when the move is actually completed. In order to avoid this mess, always make certain that any estimates you get from movers company are either binding or carries a “not to exceed” clause.

Take 6 to 8 weeks to choose a mover

The process of finding the right moving company for you would possibly take this much time. You can request for quotes from each mover, check references and make your final decision about which is the best suitable company for you. Moving companies would require much time to fit your move into their schedules, particularly in the summer months that are their busiest time of year.

Make decision in advance

Decide in advance which goods need to be shipped and which need to be sold or given away. Then consider packing, remember that packing is always has separate quote in moving. An estimator might come to your home and make a bid, or creating an estimate by speaking to you over the phone. Moves that are less than 50 miles away are normally priced by the hour. For longer distance moves, estimates depend on weight, normally per 100 pounds.

Try to provide as much information as possible about strange situations on either end, so your estimates would be actually accurate. Make the mover realize of any troubles they might come at the time of delivery, such as parking problems, road access, street accessibility and delivery time limit or may be if there are any stairs or escalators involved. The cost of your move could be increased for such occurrences. Try to book a “parking space” for the moving van, if you’re moving in a new home in a congested street. If the moving team has to carry your load more than 75 feet, from the moving van upto your door step, you might be charged for unnecessary distance.

How Do You Go Buying Containers?

0

Before you go buying containers, you have to decide what you want them for. Are you planning to ship goods in the containers? If so, you need CSC – Convention for Safe Containers – certification testifying that the container is still suitable for safe handling and transportation in a commercial inter-modal transport environment. What this means is that the container should still be sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of being moved about from trucks to railcars to ships and back to railcars and trucks till it reaches its destination.

Containers are made of high tensile steel with a reinforced rigid framework, and designed to survive in the extreme conditions of an ocean voyage. Walls are corrugated steel sheets and interiors are made of treated timber. There would be double doors at one end of the standard container, retained securely by four locking bars that extend to the full height of the container. Buying Containers for Storage

If you are buying containers for storing your goods, CSC certification is not needed. However, you have to ensure that the containers are still vandal proof and jemmy proof. Padlocks can be used for additional security to secure the lockable handles fitted to the four locking bars.

Depending on your storage requirements, you might need additional fittings like shelves. You might also desire to have light fittings inside. It is best to have these done by the container sellers, who are familiar with container specifics. Transporting and Locating Containers

Containers are heavy, with a standard 20 feet container weighing over 2000kg. Hence container trucks fitted with cranes typically transport them. These trucks can load and unload the heavy container and transport them safely.

The containers should be placed on level ground as otherwise you might find it difficult to open the heavy doors. A good idea is to erect four level corner concrete blocks to place the four corners of the container.

The location where you want to put the container should have adequate area to handle the container and the large truck, with no overhanging obstacles up to a height of about 25 feet. An obstacle free space of 60′x20′x25′ is a minimum at the proposed location. Buy or Rent?

You can rent or buy the containers. Decide on the best option considering your requirements. If you rent, you can indicate that you would like a purchase option to be exercised later if needed. Other Issues

Containers can be painted the color you want. They are very sturdy and require little maintenance. While storing goods, it is better not to stack damp affected goods against the walls, as closed areas like container insides are prone to condensation.

Containers can be modified and converted to suit different uses. For example, you can convert them into offices, canteens, shops and so on. The mobile offices and canteens are ideal for work sites. Container sellers would have the experience and facilities to customize the containers in these and other ways. Discuss your requirements with them when buying containers.

The “Packing 411″ Gives Holiday Shoppers the Upper Hand on Sending Gifts

0

When it comes to handling gifts, Santa has the advantage over everyone, but with a little preparation and know-how, consumers still have some tricks up their own sleeves. It may not include a flying sleigh or eight reindeer, but there’s no need to panic when it comes to shipping and receiving holiday packages.
“We’ve seen some wild packages come through the door over the years,” said Audrey Jones, The UPS Store franchisee. “All that work to find the perfect gift can be wasted if the package isn’t properly prepared for shipping. ”
To ensure packages are delivered in perfect condition, she suggests using a new box specifically designed for shipping, instead of moving boxes. The old boxes in the basement left over from the last move or catalog order are not the best choices. Also, choose packing materials that provide bubble cushioning. Old clothes and newspapers don’t offer the right amount of protection for that “perfect gift. ” For perishable foods, place foods in an airtight container or plastic bag before placing them in a gift box. Fill gapes in the container with squares of bubble cushioning to soften the vibration.
Before closing the box, place an extra mailing label inside, just in case the outside label is damaged. Seal the outside of the box with clear, professional-grade packaging tape. Duct tape, making tape and cellophane tape, as well as packages wrapped in paper or tied with string are no-no’s. The proper shipping supplies are available at local shipping companies such as UPS.
For those who are seeking a more “green” alternative to standard shipping, companies such as the UPS Store are introducing earth-friendly packaging that eliminates the need for bubble cushioning and packaging peanuts for many items. Biodegradable peanuts are also being produced and are available at select UPS stores. Still, customers can be earth-friendly with the use of recycled boxes for their shipping supplies. . And even though those packing peanuts are not a favorite “green” item, it’s a great idea to reuse them in packages rather than throwing them away. Overall, customers who choose carefully just in the size of the box they send, rather than grabbing whatever seems easiest, will help to reduce the use of fuel during delivery, which can have a great impact on the environment.
For do-it-yourselfers, Internet shipping options enable customers to indicate their service preferences, pay by credit card, print shipping labels and track packages. Once the label has been placed on the package, customers can choose to drop their package off at the local shipping company, arrange for a pick up, or drop off at a UPS drop box.
With only 21 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, the week before Christmas week is expected to be the busiest shipping week. Since Monday is usually the busiest shipping day of the week, consider mailing packages Tuesday through Saturday. Customers should plan on five days for most ground shipping and make sure to consult their shipping company to determine the best dates for on-time delivery when shipping internationally or to military personnel. Most of these shipping businesses also offer extended holiday hours for customers’ convenience.
UPS’s mail rooms will be bursting as they expect to deliver 5. 6 million air packages on Friday, December 21 – more than two-and-a-half times the normal daily volume. It is also geared up to handle more than 150 million online package tracking requests during the week of December 19. To handle this immense volume, the company serves as one of the holiday season’s top employers, adding roughly 60,000 seasonal employees. Its ground fleet of more than 94,000 package cars, vans, and tractors has expanded by approximately 7,000 vehicles. For procrastinators, UPS accepts Next Day Air packages on Friday, Dec. 21 for delivery on Monday, Dec. 24, just in time for the big day.
